ABOUT THE PROJECT

From the street this beautifully restored Californian bungalow fits seamlessly within the heritage conservation area with only a slight hint of the new extension at the rear. Immediately upon entering the front gate, your eyes are drawn toward the curiously contrasting vestibule that inserts itself into the existing home seamlessly. Entering the home, an existing brick wall has been revealed as a nod to the building’s history. This texture and warmth continues down the hallway that doubles as the family gallery leading toward the heart of the home. A brass threshold that transitions between new and old reveals the beauty of the extension at the rear. A gentle splay in the plan builds the anticipation further until your eye is drawn through to the outdoor living area, pool and garden beyond.

From the outset, the client’s brief demanded a home that combined period style, contemporary design all while catering for the life of a growing family. The home is essentially zoned into two separate areas, the existing home, which houses the private areas being bedrooms, bathrooms, study, and entry. The new addition contains the public zones being rumpus/guest bedroom and the main living, dining and kitchen area which are centred around an internal courtyard. The internal courtyard separates the ‘adult’ living space from the ‘kids’ living space whilst enabling visual connection. This courtyard also provides opportunity for northern light and the north eastern breezes to flow into the main living space.

The external building form is a modern interpretation of the traditional Californian Bungalow which pays homage to the existing building and other houses within the heritage conservation area without trying to replicate its character. A simple, yet refined building form with a focus on reduced maintenance and serviceability, allowing the clients to spend more time enjoying life in their new home with their children, family and pets.

Working closely with our clients we were able to create a sense of comfortable luxury within the home, that also honoured the original homes heritage. Through variations in volume, space and the careful selection of materials, the home that is both refined and comfortable as a family home. The materials longevity and timeless qualities compliment the functionality of all the spaces to make this home one that should enhance the lives of its users for many decades.
